Luther is a great musician AND a great guy too. The first time I met him in 2008 I extended my hand and he freaked out when he saw the condition of my middle finger and made a terrible face and then a puzzeled look. I offered: " cut through both tendons in my knuckle and now my finger will always droop at the last knuckle".......without skippin` a beat and thinkin` like a true picker he responded: "you`ll just have to use your thumb more" and shrugged, as if to say you`ll just have to make the adjustment. South Memphis String Band keeps getting back together. They will do more together. They are all workaholics in their craft ! All 3 guys are friendly and have a great sense of humor. Alvin is the least talkative, and he doodles on everything he signs. You should check out more by Alvin Youngblood Hart(especially) and Jimbo Mathus too. Alvin fits into more situations than Jimbo does. They both play many styles of music>>>>> Alvin: Jimbo:

Last night it was>>>>>>
The Levon Helm Band/Midnight Ramble Sessions Vol. 2/2005/1 DVD & 1 CD
This package contains 9 songs and a bonus song on the DVD and the same 9 songs, in the same order on the CD. After my brother and his wife saw Levon play at the Ryman in Nashville several years ago, he sent me this. I have loved Levon`s palaying and singing(OH THAT VOICE !) since about 1970.
Here`s the opener and best song(IMHO) on the DVD:

Today it was>>>>>>>
Deep Purple/History, Hits & Highlights `68-`76/2DVDs/2009
A romp through the different lineups of Deep Purple up to their first breakup in 1976. Here`s a video of the 2nd, and my favorite, lineup of Deep Purple.....from the Fireball album:
Now when I say it was my favorite lineup........I`m refering to listening pleasure and the songs recorded in that time period. However, I can not imagine being stuck out on the road with Ritchie. I can`t believe they put up with his antics so long. BUT when his mind was right and his mood was right, he could be brilliant and gifted with that stratocaster !

By coincidence I started on 2 Nils DVDs over a week ago and after reading your post Jim.....I finished up this morning. As much as I love Nils` music. I have a hard time watching a bunch of acoustic in a row. No matter how good the music, boredom sets in after about the 3rd song in a row without any electric to perk it up.
Jim sent me both of these>>>>>
Nils Lofgren/Live at Town and Country/2012:
I always love when Nils and his brother pick each others` guitars !
Nils Lofgren/Live at the Birchmere/2006:
Well Jim.....Nils is playing Glasgow on Saturday night>>>>>>>>>>>>

While at my Brother`s house, over the weekend, we watched:
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers/Runnin` Down A Dream/2006/CD/3 DVDs
A very enjoyable and informative look at Tom`s live and he and the Heartbreaker`s music. I learned a few things and totally enjoyed every minute of it ! Tom`s success was a mix of luck and calculation ! Unless you don`t like their music.......this is an outstanding documentary/Live Show/previously unreleased songs package.

I totally agree, Rick. We've watched the documentary at least twice so far. Very intersting, and so good to see how Tom Petty showed the music industry that they can't just rip him off.

The last few nights I`ve been watching>>>>>>>> Rory Gallagher/Live At Montreux/2 DVDs/2006 This is an EXCElLENT package that shows footage from `75, `77, `79, `85 and `94 of Rory and his band(of that year) playing the Montreux Jazz Festival. This footage is crystal clear and the music comes through beautifully ! Here`s a few highlights from the performances : From `75: From `77: `79: `85: `94: I enjoyed talking to Bela Fleck about him playing with Rory a few years ago when we saw him play nearby. Here`s a picture my son drew of Rory for me for my last birthday, and one of my autographed Rory albums , and my concert ticket and flyer from seeing him(them) on Feb. 12, 1976

Friday night I watched:
RAMONES/RAW/2004/DVD
Living here in the country, I completely missed the punk rock scene.......... I`ve been going back and checking out stuff by Ramones, The Stooges, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Minutemen, Firehose and some others that I missed during the day of it. The fans of Ramones were very committed to them, especially in South America. I esppecially relate to Dee Dee. He reminds me of a lot of the partiers, meth addicts and bikers that I grew up with. Loved his humor !
Here`s a clip:
Yesterday and last night I watched and listened to:
Arc Angels/Living In A Dream/2 CDs-DVD/2009
I really loved this package ! The DVD has a 80 minute live show done at Stubbs BBQ in Texas and a 30 minute documentary. The one CD is the same live show as the DVD and the other is a bonus disc with new songs. Learned a lot from the documentary. It was Doyle`s drug addictions that kept them from continueing in the early `90s and it was Tommy Shannon`s health and happiness that kept them from fully reuniting when this project was done. I found the best place to buy this is through CD Baby or the Arc Angels site(which sends you to CD Baby). The common bond here was Stevie Ray Vaughan. All these guys knew him for years and this band was a passage to healing for these 4 guys. Just so happened that they were loved by the people who heard them and were then encouraged to form a band and continue. It wasn`t that easy.........
A sampling:
Ya even get a Rory Gallagher tease in this a last one.......................

Yesterday it was: Little Feat/Skin It Back/DVD/1977 This is from the first year that the Rockpalast concerts were broadcast LIVE on television in Europe. This same night Rory Gallagher was also on the bill. Little Feat was a huge influence on my musical growth starting in the early `70s. I always enjoyed hearing them live and talking with them after a show. Richie and Fred were always especially friendly and talkative. I still miss Richie. He was my favorite from the band and one of my two favorite drummers of all time. I have many things that these guys signed for me at different times. Great Memories ! Sadly even though I saw Little Feat with Lowell in `78..........I never got to meet him.

Some of my favorite bands to see LIVE went out on the road this week>>>>>>>>>
Gov`t Mule with John Scofield billed as Sco- Mule
JJ Grey and Mofro with London Souls opening for them.
North Mississippi Allstars and Anders Osborne billed as NMO(North Mississippi Osborne).
Sooo this week I`ve been watchin` :
Gov`t Mule/A Tale Of 2 Cities/2 DVDs/2007
Two DVDs, 2 entire night`s shows during the time period that Andy Hess was the bass player for Mule. One is from10/15/04 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston Ma. and the other is from 12/09/06 at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago Il. Both are excellent performances with excellent audio and video ! Both DVDs total together over 5 hours of live songs and then there is a little bonus stuff.
Here`s the opener from the first DVD:
And here`s one from the 2nd DVD. At about 4 minutes Matt`s drum throne breaks and gets fixed mid-song:

I've been giving the new Aristocrats DVD a good go-round. "Culture Clash Live" is a DVD of live performances from 5 different shows they did in 2013-4 whilst on a tour.
The thing I love about them is not only did the drummer Marco and the bassist Bryan play in Joe Satriani's band (and will do again in the upcoming Satch tour) but they are really great and talented musicians in their own right, and when you put that together with the amazing, eccentric Englishman and guitarist Guthrie Govan, it's a wonderfully talented trio. They all enjoy a laugh and don't take themselves too seriously, which is good.
They do a wacky blend of jazz, rock, prog, metal fusion that is easy to listen to. Guthrie is just amazing and has the fastest fingers I think I've ever seen on a fretboard, not that he does any senseless wiggly-wiggly, it's all really melodic and lovely stuff.

Hello Skippygirl,
I am not familiar with Aristocrats......so I just went to youtube and watched Culture Clash to check them out. The rhythm section is solid and the guitarist is very fast and precise. I like them some. I need to sample more sometime. The guitarist sound has some similarities to Jimmy Herring for me. You gave a good write-up on them.
Last night I watched:
North Mississippi Allstars/Keep On Marchin`, Live In Burlington Vermont/11-11-05/DVD
It is a live performace(whole show) that is from the 3 piece era with Luther and Cody and Chris Chew on bass. This is during the time period that Cody had a keyboard set up with his drum kit. Not something you experience often. I just love this lineup LIVE ! I hope one day that Chris returns as the NMA bassist ! He adds alot to the lineup !!!
The story:
A song from the night showing a drummer/keyboardist combo:
And doin` one of Luther & Cody`s father`s songs:
I love the big guy`s bass playin` !!!
I miss him givin` me his set lists too.............

I learned of Luther Dickinson when he played with the Black Crowes. His slide playing really blew me away. Then I found out about the North Mississippi Allstars. Great stuff! The icing on my NMA cake was provided by Rick (rk) when he sent me some excellent NMA concert recordings. Thanks again, Rick.

You are most welcome Ralf. I am so glad that I was able to feed your hunger for more of Luther and NMA. They are one of my favorite live bands to see. No two tours are ever the same with these guys. I am looking forward to seeing them again next week with Anders Osborne and his band. It will be something new and something similar all rolled into one. Luther has come a long way since we first saw him with his tattered amps and Les Paul and SG guitars !
