Last night it was a Kenny Wayne Shepherd CD/DVD:
Kenny Wayne Shepherd, 10 Days Out-Blues From The Backroads, recorded during June 2003.
This is an excellent documentary about the aging bluesmen across the U.S. who are getting to the end of their life. He met up also with Buddy Flett and Bryan Lee who are two of the first musicians to share a stage with Kenny when he was still just a kid. Great footage of the people playing their music and talking about their life and hard times. Kenny took Stevie Ray Vaughan`s rhythm section of Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon along as well as his own Noah Hunt and met up with the bluesmen and 1 woman along the way. Here`s who they played with :
Bryan Lee
Buddy Flett
Clarence Gatemoth Brown (April 18, 1924 - September 10, 2005)
B.B. King
Jerry Boogie McCain (June 18, 1930 – March 28, 2012)
Cootie Stark (December 27, 1927 – April 14, 2005)
Neal Big Daddy Pattman (January 10, 1926 – May 4, 2005)
John Lee Holeman
Etta Baker (March 31, 1913 – September 23, 2006)
Honeyboy Edwards (June 28, 1915 – August 29, 2011)
Henry Townsend (October 27, 1909 – September 24, 2006)
Henry Gray
Hubert Sumlin (November 16, 1931 – December 4, 2011)
Willie Big Eyes Smith (January 19, 1936 – September 16, 2011)
George Wild Child Butler (October 1, 1936 – March 1, 2005)
Calvin Fuzz Jones (June 9, 1926 – August 9, 2010)
Pinetop Perkins (July 7, 1913 – March 21, 2011
Bob Margolin
Lazy Lester
Here`s Bryan Lee telling about radio stations and white boy redos of originals.....I can very much relate to both of these things. When I was young I would wait for the sun to go down to get in WLS CKLW WOWO WCFL WNBC and more to hear REAL MUSIC....not heard here in the sticks. Bryan was the 1st to bring Kenny to the stage:
I close my eyes too....................we should ALL be a little more like Bryan...........
When the video ends, one of the choices on the screen should be Kenny and Buddy playing on Leadbelly`s grave. Watch it too.....then when that ends....Etta Baker.....and so on......
This is a must have item for blues enthusiasts !!!

Last night I watched, and today at work I listened to:
North Mississippi Allstars/Do It Like We Used To Do(LIVE `96-`08)/2CD-1DVD....released 2009
This is one of my favorite bands to see live......great musicians, good people and friendly.
The 2 CDs start in 1996 and progress through 2008 with live performances. The DVD is a historical documentary about the Mississippi Hill Country, it`s people and it`s music. Also some bonus footage of live gigs. Luther and Cody Dickinson grew up with mutigenerational musicians from the Burnside, Turner, Kimbrough, & Hempfield families; and their father owned a studio and had his own musical past(biggest probably being the keyboard player for the Stones` Wild Horses at Muscle shoals studio) and was still active near Memphis and in Mississippi. They started out exploring music and goin` to the juke joints and house parties and then started playing music with their father to get seasoned to the game. They then teamed up with a friend Paul Taylor, who`s father played with their father. They had their DDT band for several years before a mushroom experience showed Luther towards the North Mississippi Allstars way of music. These guys are both multi-instrumentalists and have each been a part of several bands. I love most of the things they do and no two shows are the same.
Here`s a trailer for the DVD:
A good ol` Mississippi Fred McDowell song on the CDs:
ANOTHER Excellent documentary about musicians from that area of Mississippi is:
YOU SEE ME LAUGHING.....put out by Fat Possum Records
Here`s a trailer for it:
My favorite story by R.L. Burnside and Kenny Brown:

RK is correct... if you get to see them live...you'll enjoy!!! I got to see Luther and Cody solo when Keys to the Kingdom CD was released, when they opened for Robert Plant on the Band of Joy tour, then with the full band at Charlotte's Neighborhood Theatre about a year later. I had seen Luther previously playing lead guitar with The Black Crowes at the same venue on their WarPaint tour.

Davy, Have you ever seen a bass player play a bass like Tal? I had an acquaintance of mine tell me about this DVD and when I saw her, I couldn't take my eyes off from her. Just go to the 11:23 mark (that's the song where she has a solo). Her solo starts at 11:48. OMG....she plays the bass like a guitar. Jeff Beck bows down to her! Then he raises his arms to the skies praising her. If I ever see her LIVE it will be the death of me. IN a good way. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ndyILodYwM

The last two nights I watched:
Message to Love/The Isle Of Wight Festival/1970
This has footage of the show, the people who went there, and the people who lived there. It was the UK`s rebuttal to Woodstock. Some great music by the artists of the day. A lot of displeasure showed by those who went there looking for another free ride. Great insight into the mindset of those not set on following blindly behind the past generations......
Music by Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, Donovan, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Free, Taste, Tiny Tim, John Sebastian, Ten Years After, Moody Blues, Kris Kristoferson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull.

Last night it was: Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat/ Real Time-LIVE In Texas/2008 A great live performance by Jim and his band in their home state of Texas. Jim is an excellent guitar player with a great voice. He favors his strat but plays many guitars. He starts out doin` Hendrix`s Are You Experienced on an electrified National and ends playing a Rory Gallagher song on a Telecaster. In between he uses two of his strats and plays about 10 of his songs. I have several of his CDs and they are all good. I especially love his Tiajuana Bible CD which was my first purchase. I bought it from him and had him sign it in N.Y.C when he and Davy and several others played a Rory Gallagher Tribute at the Iridium. I hope to catch Jim again one day with his Band. Jim has also been, and still is, George Thorogood`s lead guitarist. We`ve seen Jim with him a couple times too since he joined in 1998 or 1999. I bought this after we saw him with Davy. Here`s one from the DVD:

Last night it was a 2 DVD package of Rory Gallagher. One DVD was a documentary and the other was 16 songs performed for TV broadcasts. Ghost Blues-The Story of Rory Gallagher and The Beat Club Sessions(`71 & `72) 2010 Ghost Blues tells of Rory starting as a kid getting a guitar at 11 and joining a showband at 15 and then progressing to his own band Taste through it`s changes and then in 1971 starting up the Rory Gallagher Band that he fronted until his death in 1995. It tells of his love for his music, the blues, being the most important thing in his life...that and his `61 strat. Rory was a hard working musician who was constantly on the road, and he loved the road. However, he hated flying, and it was hard on him emotionally. His drinking and prescription medications destroyed his liver. He had a transplant but never recovered from it. This documentary does a pretty good job of delivering the pertinent information about his musical life and his early demise. R.I.P. Rory Gallagher The Beat Club Sessions 1971-1972. Great energy from this first lineup of the Rory Gallagher band with Rory on guitar and vocals and Gerry McAvoy on bass and Wilgar Campbell on Drums. Very clean footage and great audio from these old films ! This was the first two years when Rory strapped on the harmonica for some songs and even played an occasional sax solo. Both were never seen or heard again shortly after this time period. This is a very good DVD showing Rory playing songs that would become favorites of his and his fans for the next almost 25 years.......these though were played early on after being written while the fire was still burning bright !!! Here`s a trailer for the DVD: Here`s a song from the Beat Club Sessions: Rory has been one of my favorite guitarist, singer, songwriter, frontmen since I first stumbled upon him in 1976. My son gave me this picture, for my last birthday, that he drew. It willed be framed for me for Christmas then will go on my sterio room wall with other Rory memorabilia>

Yesterday/Last night I listened to the soundtrack and then watched:
Bob and the Monster
A few months ago I was passing my son`s room and heard the song: Burn, But Don`t Burn Out. It took a hold of me and reminded me of friends lost over the years and I asked him what gives. He told me about Bob Forrest.....the celebrity rehab guy. I did not know that he was a musician and was on his way to being on his way to something, but something else got in the way. I`ve known alot of Bob`s in my days. Here.......that Bob Forrest was a songwriter and had a band on the west coast, and he sold out all his friends and let the band slip away and he nearly did too. Heroin nearly killed him but as the old saying goes: What does not kill you makes you stronger. So I now understand that Bob Forrest is the perfect guy to help you if you need help. He`s been there. I have bought all their music the past few months since being turned on to them. I like it.
Here`s the song from the soundtrack that caught my attention:
Here`s a trailer for the documentary:
And here`s Thelonious Monster and Bob in his usual condition:
Not a pretty picture, but a story worth hearing.

Just before Thanksgiving I started watching, and finished up on last night, the 2 CD/2 DVD package called:
Love For Levon--A Benefit To Save The Farm 2013
I first got exposed to Levon Helm when he was in The Band in 1970. I have continued to listen to his and their music the rest of my life. The Band had a sound unique to themselves and Levon played his kit like no other drummer. I was blessed to see them once after reuniting without Robbie Robertson in the early 80`s. There are like 40 or 50 musicians who play throughout this concert to help save the barn and home and grounds that Levon lived on and in. For all he gave us musically; it didn`t pay the bills..........
I highly recommend seeing this for the music associated with Levon and the talents of the musicians who stepped up to play and help the cause.
These guys, this look, this sound, THAT VOICE is what got me hooked on Levon:

Yesterday/Last Night it was: The Drive-By Truckers,Live from Austin Tx, 2009....recorded Sept 26, 2008. It is another CD/DVD combo. Both the CD and DVD have every song on them in the same exact order. It was a dream of Patterson Hood to one day play Austin City Limits, and this is the night his dream came true ! Patterson is the son of Muscle Shoal`s house bass player, from back in the day, David Hood.....who has played on many legendary recordings, with many great musicians. I`ve had tickets to see these guys play twice, but, well one of these days it`ll work out. My favorite song/story is 18 Wheels of Love, which I would really love to believe is true: 18 Wheels of Love.....the story is longer than the song: I gave the DVD/CD to my lovely wife Miri for St Nicholas day. We both love it. Thanks for the tip, Rick!

You are most welcome Rusty.
Happy to know that you both enjoyed it !
I`ve had tickets to see DBT 2 times, but have not yet got to see them. The first time, they were to play Warren Haynes` Christmas Jam that we attended in 2010.......but they cancelled from being road warry and not feeling well. The second time, they were to play 45 miles from here last summer.......but my legs were not able to make the trip and stand in a standing room only venue. One day, hopefully, it`ll all work out.
It`s nice when your wife shares your interests !

It`s nice when your wife shares your interests ! Yes, we have the same taste in music for the most part. And that's a good thing. I can't imagine what I would do if she listened to Justin Bieber or techno music... Haha

Speaking of Taste.......last night I watched 2 Rory Gallagher bootleg DVDs>>>>>>>
First was one called: Rory Gallagher/Limerick 1972:
It had 2 things on 1 DVD.
The Limerick part was 30 minutes of Rory playing live and mixed in interviews with him. The live music featured Rod De`Ath on drums for his very first performance with the RGB. Joan Jett has the same walk that Rory had.
Since it`s a bootleg.....here it is:
Then there was :Gallagher Blues/A Requiem For Rory: It is a 30 minute tv documentary about the life and times and death of Rory. It talks to a bunch of people who knew and/or respected him and varied footage from his life.
Here`s a taste of it:
The next DVD was called: Belfast `84: It is a great performance full of energy, nearly an hour long. It ends with Rory dashing all over the stage, climbing on amplifiers and avoiding drunken hugs from fans swarming the stage. Then there is another piece of footage added of them playing Bullfrog Blues with the stage full of fans !
Here`s Rory doin` a nice acoustic song from the DVD: Out On The Western Plain:
