This is the time of year that I start digging out my Music DVDs for fall and winter viewing. I like concert DVDs and music documentary DVDs both. I`ve bought some and watched them this summer, but I`m making now the time that I`m starting for this thread. I`ll be posting what I`m watching and welcome you to share what you are watching too. We might connect each other to some new interests.
I actually started a few days ago and this is what I`ve watched so far:
Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam, Live at The Gaiety Theater.....recorded Oct. 12th, 2009: I just bought this last year, and I enjoyed watching Davy play to his "home court" so to speak. I would guess that playing to people you know might be the most intimidating type of performance ! Nice performance and a good quality DVD. Y`all don`t need much discription on this-a-one !
Jonny Lang, Live At Montreux.....1999: A very powerful performance by an 18 year old Jonny. This kid was on fire for several years during this time period. I was able to see him once in 1998 and once in 1999. Jonny is still a very talented individual, but does no longer have all the fire and energy in his performances. HERE HE DOES ! If you`ve seen Jonny, but hadn`t in his early years, you`ll really see the difference. The bass player was killed by a hit and run driver years ago. I always thought he was solid and helped the young man get seasoned to the game. Good Morning little School Girl takes on a whole new meaning when delivered by an 18 year old rather than a middle aged...or older....man ! Loved his guitar too.......

Great idea, Rick.
Davy's DVD from 2009 is certainly something that we're watching frequently. What many peopla don't know is that there's also an older DVD called Back Door Slam, Live At The Gaiety Theatre, Douglas, Isle Of Man, June 10th 2006. This one is with the "old" Back Door Slam lineup with Ross and Jamie in the rhythm section. The DVD features mostly songs from the Roll Away album, but also some gems like Ain't No City, Rory Gallagher's Going To My Home Town, John Hiatt's Slow Turning,...
What else do we like to watch? You mentioned music documentaries and I immediately thought of Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Runnin' Down A Dream. It's a set containing a concert DVD (30th anniversary hometown concert in Gainesville, FL), 2 DVDs with a documentary about the history of TP & the HB, and a bonus soundtrack CD. The documentary is extremely interesting and very entertaining. I wasn't aware thet TP is such a hard-boiled guy. He really showed the music industry that they can't do everything with him.

Thanks for the reply Rusty, and for the heads up on the other Davy DVD. I`ll look for that to buy sometime. I met Davy`s first back up band in 2008 along with Davy and they all signed the Roll Away CD. I want to see that Tom Petty DVD. My brother keeps asking me if I`ve seen it yet. I guess Tom and his Dad had their moments. Last night I watched: Walter Trout, The Blues Came Calling Documentary after listening to the CD in the afternoon at work. You can buy the CD/DVD combo and I`d highly recommend it both for the music and lyrics and the candid talk in the documentary about his life on the road, doing what he loves, and the consiquences, especially liver failure due to drug use. Walter moved from New Jersey to California to persue his love of playing the blues and started out as the only white boy in a blues band backing up Mama Thorton and John Lee Hooker among others. Next it was the biker oriented Canned Heat, then his time with John Mayall`s Bluesbreakers sharing guitar duties with Coco Montoya. While he was with Mayall, he crossed paths with Carlos Santana who shocked-embarassed Walter into sobriety. On his 38th birthday Walter left to start his own band and future. There is also some about the making of this album`s music and the processes that Walter works with. Since the finishing of this project, Walter has had a successful liver transplant, with some serious complications. Even recently he was back in the hospital but he keeps pushin` on, or as I say Keeps On Keepin` On. He found true love in his wife and she`s kept him going. www.waltertrout.com/You won`t believe the in your face energy/velocity coming from this beaten, frail looking man. His looks, can`t conceal the fire inside !! He saw his friend, and one of my favorite drummers, Richie Hayward(Little Feat) posatively battle liver failure, but still die before recieving a transplant a few years back. I believe he`s determined to beat this and be back on the road by the end of 2015.

Nice thread topic Rick... I have all the above mentioned so far except the early BDS video. Would love to have a copy of that one!!! Maybe one day with someone's help... Some of my favorite vids include Joe Bonamassa's Tour de Force 4 DVD set that I treated myself to last Christmas. 4 different shows, with 4 different bands over 4 nights, in 4 different venues. The bonus dvd's are also very interesting with enlightened conversation w/ Joe, producer Kevin Shirley, and band members of how they continue to survive in the music industry without any "hits"...and allows you to understand why Joe B's ticket prices are so high due to renting the venues they play. I agree TP's "Running Down a Dream" is a must have for any Heartbreakers fan. Can't ever leave out mentioning the amazing Mike Campbell on guitar when talking about Tom Petty...other TP & the HB's video's in my collection are High Grass Dogs-Live from the Fillmore 1999, Live at the Olympic 2002,Soundstage 2005, and Damn the Torpedoes 2010 release. 2 others definately worth mentioning is Little Feat's "Skin It Back" from 1977 featuring Lowell George at the very peak of their powers, and ... The Winery Dogs, "Unleashed in Japan 2013, featuring another one of my favorite guitarist and vocalist, Richie Kotzen.

Our connections keep getting bigger Rick. I saw Walter play at the Treasure Lake Ski Lodge in DuBois Pa. It`s right in the middle of the state on interstate 80. He couldn`t believe that I learned of him through Rory Gallagher fans. They book bands into this small club, mostly in exchange for room and meals. A lot of musicians traveling between Chicago and N.Y.C. will come here and play in exchange for their services. Gives US a great opportunity to see some big names. Ana Popovic was a good show and a great chat afterwards. She loved my Rory shirt and stories. I also love that Little Feat DVD.......especially Lowell`s face when Sam lets out that big GROWL ! I was lucky to see Lowell with Little Feat in 1978.....larger than life in those white bib overhauls. Here`s a picture of me and Paul after Richie`s death. I had just given him a bootleg of a Mule show the night of Richie`s passing that Warren dedicated to Richie and then played On Your Way Down and Spanish Moon: 08.12.2010 Theatre At Westbury, Westbury, NY Set 1 Spanish Moon with Jackie Greene, Bill Evans, Jimmy Vivino, John Hofer & Lincoln Schleifer Wandering Child World Gone Wild Frozen Fear Kind Of Bird with Bill Evans, with Get Away Tease Thorazine Shuffle Set 2 Brighter Days > Like Flies Devil Likes It Slow with Bill Evans Going Out West > with Jimmy Vivino & Lincoln Schleifer Bang A Gong > with Jimmy Vivino & Lincoln Schleifer, with Improv Verses Going Out West > with Jimmy Vivino & Lincoln Schleifer Bang A Gong > with Jimmy Vivino & Lincoln Schleifer Drums Streamline Woman Brand New Angel Encore After Midnight with Jackie Greene, Bill Evans, Jimmy Vivino & Lincoln Schleifer On Your Way Down with Jackie Greene, Bill Evans, Jimmy Vivino & Lincoln Schleifer Dedicated to the life & music of Richie Hayward Looking for something to watch today after I spin some vinyl, and listen to the 4 new CDs coming in the mail, 2 by Gary Clark Jr.(Live and Bright Lights EP), the new Johnny Winter tribute CD and Lucinda Williams new double CD.

With the growth of streaming content on the net I rarely purchase DVD's anymore....but I have some all time favourites I'm surprised haven't worn out by now.
One Night in Dublin A Tribute to Phill Lynott........this might just rate as one of the best purchases of my life. Gary Moore and the surviving members from Thin Lizzy's different incarnations paying tribute to late Phil Lynott in a one off concert in front of a packed house in Dublin....this dvd never gets old and friends who have borrowed it order their very own copies the very next day. Hearing Eric Bell play the opening to Whiskey in the Jar is worth the purchase price alone.
Ghost Blues........ A very close second to the above mentioned. Watching Rory Gallagher always leaves me wanting more and lamenting (like Gary Moore) his early passing. The live footage from the German TV show Beat Club is jaw dropping and Rory's version of Toredown gives me goosebumps every time.
Big Sexy Bust......ok maybe not that one....
Stereophonics - Performance and Cocktails: Live at Morfa Stadium......just a great concert from a band who were at their best at this time...
Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam, Live at The Gaiety Theater.....A very relaxed Davy cranking out some great music (although the keyboards were tad annoying....is that terrible of me to say that !). of course there's all your favourites there ...i never tire of hearing Tear Down the Walls or Gotta Leave, Riverbed .

Hey there pjc,
Ghost Blues is definately a must have for Rory fans ! I had that pre-ordered and am very happy with Daniel Gallagher`s overseeing of it. I think he will take good care of Rory`s legacy in the years ahead. I have never seen the Phil tribute, but hope to one day. It is another that I`ve heard about from other Rory fans.
Last night I watched 2 Black Crowes DVDs.
First was The Black Crowes, Warpaint-LIVE, 2009. I bought this a year or so after seeing them live on April 19th 2008 in Salamanca N.Y. I had been into them from the beginning, then got away from them during Chris and Rich`s heavy squabbling years...... Luther Dickinson is in my top 5 singer/songwriter/guitarist/frontmen list so when Chris and Rich asked him to join them for a few years I was back on board. This is a great quality video and shows off Luther`s drive and talents well. I used to think that this was a weaker album, but it has grown on me over the years.
Next was The Black Crowes, Cabin Fever, 2009. This is a view of their live recording of their album Before The Frost/Until The Freeze in 2009. For this album they went to Levon Helm`s house and studio in New York and wrote some songs, sold some tickets and made a record in front of their fans with little rehearsal. Nice intimate setting, with music and talk and beautiful country. My son bought this for me after we went and saw them at Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh on November, 12, 2010, and because I own the vinyl. One of my favorite songs they do on here is Oh Sweet Nothing, an old Velvet Underground song. That is the song they ended their gig with too. We have both a soundboard copy and a audience taped copy of the Pittsburgh show.

Yesterday I watched 5 DVDs, some pretty short.
First was James Gang. Rides Again. The first 25 minutes are from a French 1971 performance of Joe Walsh, Jimmy Fox and Dale Peters. The film is good but the volume needs maxed out to hear well. Great to see this old footage of them having fun playing. It has some interview footage with French interpretor asking about Altimont and Kent State and other social unrest situations acoss the U.S. There is also a 25 minute Don kirshner`s Rock Concert segment from a couple/few years later with Tommy Bolin on guitar. He has an odd stage presence(to me) and is wearing his silk attire. I have always loved listening to Tommy, but he always seemed uneasy on stage.
2nd I watched Iron Butterfly, The Lost Broadcast. It has two songs recorded live for Beat Club in January 1971 totalling about 24 minutes. The songs are Easy Rider and Butterfly Bleu. I love this footage. These songs are from my favorite Iron Butterfly album....Metamorphosis, 1970. Mike Pinera was one of the early users of the the talk bag as seen in this footage. It can be watched on youtube.
3rd it was North Mississippi Allstars, Polaris DVD Companion. It is an EPK in connection to the release of their Polaris CD in 2003, and It has 2 songs.
4th was Peter Frampton`s Fingerprints bonus DVD from 2006. it has two songs: Black Hole Sun and Cornerstones with Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman
Last it was Monster Magnet, Monolithic Baby bonus DVD with an interview, 2 official videos, and two live songs. I got hooked on Dave Wyndorf`s New Jersey based stoner music back in the mid to late 90s. Great flow and energy and fantasy lyrics that`ll get your body movin`.

I have a few favourites I always turn to -
Davy and BDS from the Gaiety Stevie Ray Vaughan - a live concert, intimate setting, can't think of the title but will go take a look. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Live from Sloane Castle Satchurated - Joe Satriani (of course) ACDC - Live from River Plate Michael Jackson - This Is It - (I know, I wasn't interested in it until I watched it, this is a real gem that really shows his true talent, and all the sycophants around him. Also includes Orianthi who was hired to play guitar but he died before the tour started). Documentary - It Might Get Loud - Edge, Jack White and Jimmi Page. John Mayer live in LA
I love to put one on and then go cook something amazing in the kitchen.

Last night I watched:
Albert Jarvinen, Finnish Guitar Legend-video history 1974-1990
I was sent this by a swap friend from Finland. Albert(Pekka) would have been 64 tomorrow. Unfortunately he died when he was 40. He played in several bands in finland and played original songs as well as great covers of what was being done around the world. This is not an easy DVD to find, but a very enjoyable watch. Albert was named after Albert King. Albert Jarvinen was a guitar player only.

Sittin` here listening to Self Entitled Man with my 2nd cup of coffee..........good combo..... Last night I watched Rising Low. It is a documentary about the life and music of Allen Woody, and the journey for Gov`t Mule after Allen`s death to find a bass player so the band could heal and continue playing. IT WORKED ! Some great stories of and about Woody and footage of some of the world`s most known and accomplished bass players, as well as other guest musicians. Sadly, I never got to see Woody perform live. We have had some great conversations with his father Doug though. Only man I ever knew of having an electric bass/mandolin. Allen`s father, Doug, and daughter Savannah still have most of Allen`s equiptment in storage in Nashville. phish.com/release/rising-low-mike-gordon-and-govt-mule/The man with the plan....Allen Woody:

It is very good Rusty.
I know that I am one of the last of a dying breed, as I actually BUY the items I talk about, because I like to contribute to the musician`s (hopefully) financial success. Having said all that....it can be viewed in it`s entirety on youtube. Then after you find out how much you enjoyed it you can buy a copy for a very reasonable price on the internet !
