Hello everyone, I came to know of Davy because of his Back Door Slam band opening for Gov`t Mule on Nov.2, 2008 at Carnegie Music Hall near Pittsburgh Pa. I have followed MULE for years. When I bought tickets to see them, I noticed BDS as the opening act......so I went to the internet and checked them out. I liked what I heard and saw that Davy was playing What In The World and talking about Rory Gallagher, and wearing checkered shirts ta boot ! I knew I was going to like these young guys who were focused on the Blues. With Rory and Warren Haynes(Gov`t Mule) being my two favorite singer/songwriter/guitarist/frontmen of all time, I knew I was going to like Davy. So I made a couple Rory CDs and put on my Rory shirt(like in avatar) and went to the show. I very much enjoyed the BDS opener and it ended with Davy mentioning Rory and Playing What In The World. I gave one of MULE`s roadies the CDs to give to Davy and met him and his band and they autographed their CD for me and I told them how much I enjoyed them. At the end of MULE`s show, Warren called out Davy to do two songs and he played Champagne and Reefer and Politician to close out the night. I have CDs I got from a taper of the entire night`s music. You can hear me yelling YEAH RORY ! as Davy introduces the song and gives his last words. I contined to follow MULE`s tour with Dack door Slam and saw where Warren kept calling Davy out for different songs in encores. Quite a feat for a 21 year old not yet seasoned to the game. I was quite impressed with his talents, especially through improvisation.....which is what Gov`t Mule is all about. I was also very impressed with Davy`s words about Brian Farmer(long time guitar tec, and more for MULE) after his passing recently. I`ll tell you about my next time of meeting Davy, and seeing him play with The Rhythm Devils soon. Later, R.K. Attachments:

Hey RK,
Thanks for sharing! That Gov't mule tour was just amazing. Such a great education from an amazing bunch of talented, welcoming people. They've done so much for so many.
Great role models!

Thanks for the responce Davy. I always wondered whether Rory`s brother Donal made it to San Francisco to hear you at the end of that tour ? I know that Dino McGartland(used to put out the RG Fanzine called Stagestruck), told me that Donal was gonna try and get there and hear you..........I know you played What In The World that night, so thought you might be expecting it also. My next show, seeing Davy was on Sept. 8, 2010. It was at the State Theater in State College Pa.(P.S.U.). Davy and Tim Bluhm(Mother Hips) were the two guitarists and they shared lead vocals. Andy Hess(ex Gov`t Mule) was on bass and Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzman of Grateful Dead were the drummer/percussionist. and one other guy on "talking drums ?" They played Dead music and was very good. Here it is; listen for yourself: archive.org/details/rd2010-09-08.AKG393s.Kush.Flac16You can listen as stream or download for burning to CD....... So again I got ready and made Davy a Rory shirt(in avatar) from iron ons that I bought from a guy in Belgium and they are like 35 years old......older than Davy ! I also took the 2nd Back Door Slam CD and a Gov`t Mule vinyl. My son saw Andy Hess on the phone by the bus and got him to sign his Fender Bass and my vinyl, then called me(already in Theater) to come meet Andy. He stuck around so we could meet and I told him I had this shirt for Davy.....to which he replied....Davy`s a HUGE Rory fan. Me too was my reply. I was 2nd row at the show and got one of Davy`s picks and caught up with Davy in the alley back of the theater and gave him the shirt(avatar picture) My son and I had Davy sign the Coming Up For Air CD and each got a couple pictures with Davy. He is a most friendly guy and was telling about being excited over his Triolian guitar he got. I very much enjoyed our chat, the show and all else. I was excited to tell all my Rory friends that I had given Davy the shirt and I was on a mission to tell anybody that ever heard of Rory, that Davy was an up and comer that was doing Rory`s music proud. I told Dino and others in Ireland and other places in the UK that Davy was the perfect guy to play a Rory Tribute.......which happens in several places every year in Europe, especially the UK. More about my next time seeing and hearing Davy soon............

So as I was saying: I started talking about Davy to all I know who know of Rory Gallagher. Fast forward to late winter/early spring 2011. I had been envious of the Rory fans in the UK who could meet up at Rory tributes which we don`t have here in the U.S. Actually there was one in 2005 or 2006 in New York City but I was in the middle of a 7 month recovery from head trauma with daily vertigo because of being knocked off my wife`s Harley at an intersection where a kid ran the red light. Well now there was to be a Rory Gallagher tribute party and album release party for his postumously released Notes From San Francisco and Davy Knowles was on the bill. I booked my first ever trip to N.Y.C. for my son and I. I met Davy at his table and got reintroduced and he signed the two pictures for me, one of me and Davy and one of Dalton and Davy. Davy gave a great speech(in one of the videos) about his love of Rory`s music and it`s influence on him. He played several Rory songs, with different musicians and knocked them all outta the park. Davy and Jim Suhler both do Rory`s music proud and very much in the style that Rory played. It was the last time I`ve had the pleasure of seeing and hearing this talented young man, but I hope to again before long. I never did know if my persistance played any role in Davy being there playing Rory`s music, but was happy to know that someone recognized that he should be there. Here`s some of the songs Davy played... And A Few Pictures I Took:

Was at a Mule show in December 2008 at Vodoo Lounge in KC. Went to the show with my better half and my sister and her better half. The trio from IOM came out and I remember saying "They're babies" to my sister. I'll never forget that night because I've never resonated with an opening bands music like BDS before. When Coming Home finished it was like I knew every word. I said to my sister I love the words to that song (to me it's about the lyrics as much as the music) Do you? And she said I have no idea. I never spoke the rest of the show and toaster Davy came out and more than held his own with Warren. We travelled around everywhere to catch his shows. Still do and always will.
